Mistaken Identity

An honest man was being tailgated by a stressed out woman on a busy boulevard. Suddenly, the light turned yellow, just in front of him. He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection.

The tailgating woman hit the roof, and the horn, screaming in frustration as she missed her chance to get through the intersection. As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, finger printed, photographed and placed in a holding cell. After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door.

She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects. He said, “I’m very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping off the guy in front of you, and cussing a blue streak at him. ” I noticed the ‘Choose Life’ license plate holder, the ‘What Would Jesus Do’ bumper sticker, the ‘Follow Me to Sunday-School’ bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk. Naturally, I assumed you had stolen the car.”

Very funny….sometimes I catch myself acting “un-Christian like” when other have been watching. For ex., just the other day Reese was supposed to be getting in the car (for church) and was giving Aunt Rachel a hard time, so I told him with a raised voice to get in his seat, or he was receiving a spanking. Of course, someone walked by the house. But it made me stop in my tracks and count to ten.

    I really love that story.

Just this week I’ve been able to put it to use twice… with the same person!

Monday I was being tailgatted on my way to work and it really annoyed me. I was really tempted to slam on my breaks and “teach them a lesson!” Turns out it was a coworker that I am trying to get to come to church.

Then yesterday I was waiting to turn left into a driveway and a car is flying down the street and caused me to stop and wait. I was thinking I should shake my finger at the driver as they drove by. Guess what…same person.

I’m so glad I succumbed to patience!

So is the lesson here to behave yourself all the time or is it “DON”T PUT THAT STUFF ON YOUR CAR”! Seriously, we ARE being watched all of the time and need to glorify God! But as humans we will blow it from time to time and we might have to eat a little crow. I find that the words “I’m sorry” go a long way! But if it bothers anyone to use them, then don’t mess up! B4T

A few years ago, I was the guy who slammed on the brakes, or flipped on my lights to see the people back off. I really have been trying to just keep going, or if the person is really creating an unsafe situation, pull over and let them pass. I always feel better when they go roaring by, and I can proceed w/o anger.
