Olymics & Politics

April 9, 2008 · 4 Comments

Hillary Clinton has sounded the call to boycott the 2008 Olympics due to China’s human rights violations and their treatment of Tibet.  Is this a good idea politically?  What about the athletes who have trained diligently for the last  four years?  Is it fair to them?  Will other countries support such a boycott?  Do you recall Jimmy Carter imposing a boycott on the 1980 Olympics due to the U.S.S.R.’s invasion of Afhganistan?  Did it help in any way?  Do you reall that the Eastern Bloc countries boycotted the Los Angeles held Olympics in 1984?

I think I could argue both sides of this issue.  What do you think?

It is a shame the athletes themselves will get caught up in this.

@Ben - So true. They have all sacrificed so much for at least the last four years. It’s not like they could compete at this level next year.

Isn’t it ironic that the Olympics, for years, has become this political pawn due to totalitarian governments such as Nazi Germany, USSR, and now China? Ironic since the birth place of the Olympics was in the original and pure democracy, the nation of Greece?

What in the world does competing in these games have to do with the heavy hand of China? Can’t we better win over this dark nation of oppression as we share with them the light of freedom?

You are so right Ben. Thanks for dropping by!

There is actually a little more to the boycott reasoning than just Tibet. There happens to be a genocide taking place in Darfur and China is a main supporter of the Sudanese government.

    Genocide or a Olympic gold?

    Gee, what would Jesus do?
